Is handmade tableware dishwasher safe?

There can be quite a bit of confusion about handmade tableware and the dishwasher. For example, I was recently asked by a customer who came to my studio to buy dinnerware: "Your handmade ceramics probably can't go in the dishwasher?" And I get this question a lot. The good news is, the dinnerware is dishwasher safe, but there are a couple of considerations.

Tips on how best to care for your handmade ceramics

It's not recommended to put tableware in the dishwasher regularly because it just doesn't get any lovelier over the years. This applies to both factory-made and handmade tableware. Dinnerware with a shiny glaze is more resistant to dishwashing than dinnerware with a matte glaze. This is because matte glaze is often somewhat porous in structure. Dishwasher tablets contain very aggressive detergents, and combined with hot water, they can accelerate the wear process of your tableware.

Can I put handmade tableware in the dishwasher?

Yes, you can put handmade tableware in the dishwasher. However, if you want to keep it beautiful for a lifetime, hand washing is always a better option. Occasionally putting it in the dishwasher is fine. If you choose to use the dishwasher, here are some tips:

  • Preferably use eco-friendly dishwasher detergent, and if your dishwasher has a "less hot" setting, that is preferred. Always place the items in the top drawer.
  • For matte glaze, which is more porous: rinse the tableware with soapy water and a soft sponge after use. Avoid leaving strongly discoloring substances like beet juice or turmeric (tea) on unglazed surfaces.
  • Cleaning unglazed surfaces: To remove superficial stains, scrub gently with a soft scouring pad and some dish soap. Rinse with clean water.
